Radiation Safety Training

All users of our facility must read the Radiation Safety Study Guide, and take the Radiation Safety Test. Access cards and radiation badges will be assigned after passing the test and completing the necessary radiation safety paperwork all within one year. Refresher training is provided on an annual basis. Users unable to participate in the refresher training will need to re-review the Radiation Safety Study Guide, and retake the Radiation Safety Test.

Chemical Safety

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for any hazardous substances you work with to be available and accessible to you at all times. Any SDS you receive with shipments or otherwise should not be thrown away—instead, they must be placed in your SDS file or binder.

SDS provide critical information on the properties of chemicals and chemical products. You should familiarize yourself with those properties, such as flammability, corrosiveness, and toxicity, as well as storage and handling information, before you begin working with any chemical. In case of a spill, fire, or physical contact with a chemical, you must be able to immediately refer to its corresponding SDS. This is for your personal safety and for the safety of others.

If you’re bringing chemicals to our facility, please list them on the form linked below to be brought to the beamline scientist on staff. Please note that if you bring chemicals in, you are also responsible for removing them. To request specific chemicals to be made available to you, please use the Chemical Request Form.

LSU’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety manages a database for chemicals physically present on the LSU campus. Users with established credentials can access their chemicals database for information on particular chemicals, also available through external vendor sites, such as Millipore Sigma, Ambeed, and Fisher Scientific. Both LSU and external users can refer to the main Chemical Safety page, LSU’s Standard Operating Procedures for Chemical Safety, the EHSA Handbook, and various Environmental Health and Safety Forms.
