About the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Provost

Position Overview

The Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Provost (SVCAAP) serves as the University’s Chief Academic Officer for the LSU Flagship, which consists of the historic Baton Rouge A&M campus, LSU Agricultural Center, LSU Health Sciences Center - New Orleans, LSU Health Sciences Center - Shreveport, and Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Reporting to LSU Chancellor Jim Dalton and collaborating closely with the senior vice chancellors at Pennington Biomedical, the LSU Agricultural Center, the Health Science Center – New Orleans, and the Health Sciences Center - Shreveport, the SVCAAP is responsible for facilitating academic excellence and student success, promoting robust research and scholarly activity, and advancing a unified academic and research vision across the full LSU Flagship that reflects LSU’s role as the comprehensive, multi-campus research institution in the State of Louisiana. 

The position has direct oversight of the collective of academic colleges and schools as well as student enrollment and support units based at the campus in Baton Rouge. The role also coordinates academic matters on the university level across all institutional components across the state. 

The SVCAAP ensures that LSU’s academic and research missions are aligned, coordinated, and positioned for national competitiveness. The role balances institutional ambition with operational clarity, strengthening academic quality and supporting faculty and students. The SVCAAP works to foster alignment of academic strategy, research priorities, and educational outcomes across campuses while respecting the distinct missions of each unit. In close partnership with the leadership team, the SVCAAP translates University goals into coherent academic and student success execution. The role emphasizes collaboration, shared governance, and disciplined coordination.

ACADEMIC VISION, LEADERSHIP, & GOVERNANCE

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advancing a unified academic and research vision that reflects LSU’s role as a comprehensive, multi-campus research institution 
  • Providing leadership for growing doctoral and professional education across the enterprise 
  • Facilitating deliberation with professorial bodies in the spirit of shared governance
  • Promoting collaboration across campuses, disciplines, and research entities to strengthen academic quality and research impact 
  • Fostering a culture that values teaching, scholarship, discovery, patient care, and service across all campuses 
  • Serving as a senior academic voice in planning, accreditation, and external engagement 

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, INSTRUCTION, & STUDENT SUCCESS

Key responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating academic connections between the campuses and building advantageous support structures among the campuses 
  • Advancing strategies that promote access, persistence, and completion of students 
  • Supporting innovative educational models, including interdisciplinary programs, shared curricula, and experiential learning 
  • Ensuring academic offerings align with workforce needs, research priorities, and the evolving needs of Louisiana and beyond 
  • Supporting recruitment, retention, and success of students across the enterprise

ACADEMIC POLICY, STANDARDS, & SHARED GOVERNANCE

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working collaboratively with senior vice chancellors to develop academic policies, regulations, and standards across the new LSU Flagship 
  • Coordinating and aligning academic policy for the Baton Rouge campus
  • Reviewing curricular changes and academic programs in alignment with institutional strategy and submitting through the appropriate approval process 
  • Working closely with faculty governance bodies to ensure shared governance and academic rigor 
  • Adjudicating academic and student appeals and resolving jurisdictional questions across units, as appropriate 

LEADERSHIP, ORGANIZATION, & ACADEMIC PERSONNEL

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervising designated academic leaders, such as vice provosts and deans 
  • Advising the Chancellor on academic organization, leadership appointments, and structural alignment 
  • Executing delegated personnel actions and supporting faculty recruitment, development, and retention 
  • Ensuring leadership structures support collaboration, accountability, and academic excellence across campuses 

RESOURCES, INFRASTRUCTURE, & ACADEMIC PLANNING

Key responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with the Chief Financial Officer to develop and manage academic budgets across the enterprise 
  • Aligning academic investments with strategic priorities and long-term sustainability 
  • Supporting the assessments for academic space planning and utilization in coordination with campus leadership and research priorities 
  • Balancing growth, efficiency, and quality across instructional and student success operations
